🍷 Drinks & tanninsHow to remove coffee stains
Tannin stain · cold water first if there's milk in it
The brown in a coffee stain is tannins and pigments from the beans. Straight after a spill, water and liquid detergent will remove almost all of it, but if it's left to dry for a few days it oxidizes, darkens and gets much harder to shift. If milk is involved, as in a latte, it's also a protein stain, so the order changes slightly.
🔬 Why this order works
Tannins dissolve easily in water, but contact with soap or heat tends to fix them in the fibers. So the basic order is to flush out as much as possible with water first, then break down the remaining pigment with oxygen bleach.
🧺 Step by step
Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.
👕 By fabric
Soaking in oxygen bleach is the most reliable method. If an old stain remains, use diluted chlorine bleach as a last resort, but only if the care label allows chlorine bleaching.
After pre-treating with liquid detergent, use a color-safe oxygen bleach. Before soaking, test it on an inside seam to make sure the color doesn't run.
Blot and rinse with cold water, and use only a neutral wool detergent. Don't use bleach or enzyme detergent; if color remains, take it to a dry cleaner and tell them it's coffee.
🚫 Don't
- Rubbing in bar soap or laundry soap first — it tends to set the tannins.
- Hot water on coffee with milk — the protein cooks into the fabric.
- Putting it in the dryer while a stain is still visible.
⏳ If it has already dried
For a stain that has already dried brown, apply liquid detergent and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then soak in oxygen bleach solution for a few hours or overnight; it will fade a lot. If it doesn't come out in one go, repeat the soak.
💡 Tip
If it happens when you're out, pouring on a little bottled water and blotting with a napkin spreads it less than scrubbing with a wet wipe.
❓ Common questions
Do black coffee and latte stains need different treatment?
Black coffee is a tannin stain, so cold or lukewarm water is fine, but coffee with milk, like a latte or instant coffee mix, also contains protein and must be rinsed in cold water first. Sweetened coffee stays sticky when it dries, so soak it well in water before using detergent.
What can I do right away at the office?
Fill a paper cup with cold water and wet a napkin, then hold another napkin behind the stain and press from the front. Don't rub in soap such as hand wash; pre-treat with liquid detergent when you get home.
